ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia senior cornerback and return specialist Brandon Boykin has been included on the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, according to an announcement by the Louisville Sports Commission on Monday.
Boykin is one of eight players from the Southeastern Conference on the 50-man preseason list. The Hornung Award is given annually to the most versatile player in college football and is named for football legend Paul Hornung.
Boykin, a native of Fayetteville, finished 2010 with 44 tackles, including 6.5 tackles for loss, and tied for the team lead with three interceptions. Boykin is Georgia’s active leader with sixcareer picks. He is also UGA’s leader in career kickoff return yards with 1,813 and is the only player in SEC history to have three 100-yard plays of any kind.
Also named to the 2010 Hornung Award Watch List, Boykin has also been included on the watch lists for the Nagurski Trophy, Bednarik Award, Jim Thorpe Award and CFPA Defensive Back Award & Kickoff Returner Award this preseason.
Texas Roadhouse signed on as presenting sponsor of the Hornung Award in 2011 and will team with the Louisville Sports Commission to power fan voting on Facebook. College football fans nationwide will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite player during the regular season and again during the bowl season. Fan voting will open in late September and factor into selection of the finalists and winner.
Players from all FBS teams are eligible and appearing on the Hornung Award Watch List is not a prerequisite for winning the award. The selection committee, comprised of 16 national sports journalists and former college and NFL players, will narrow the field to approximately three to five finalists in early December then will select the winner from among the finalists following the bowl season in early January.
Finalists will be announced on www.paulhornungaward.com and at the Louisville Sports Commission Breakfast on Dec. 9.
